New Poll: Michiganders’ Top Budget Priorities on GOP Chopping Block
Education, Medicaid, and food assistance top the list of what Michiganders do not want cut
MICHIGAN – On Thursday, Progress Michigan released results from their latest Lake Effect poll, highlighting just how far out of step Speaker Matt Hall and Republican lawmakers are with the people of Michigan.
“Matt Hall is playing political games with the services families rely on,” said Denzel McCampbell, Progress Michigan’s managing director. “Voters have spoken loudly and clearly: schools, health care, and community programs come first. Hall’s budget creates a false choice between roads and needed services and programs, and puts political posturing above the well-being of students, working families, and communities. It’s time for leaders who reflect the priorities of the people, not the interests of wealthy donors and extremist agendas.”
Respondents were given a list of programs due to receive cuts under the proposed Republican budget and asked what they most want to preserve:
- Education is the top funding priority for 33 percent of Michiganders.
- Medicaid is prioritized for funding by 19 percent of respondents.
- Food assistance is prioritized by 12 percent.
- Funding for community violence intervention and local programs through municipal funding is the top funding priority of 11 percent of respondents.
Results released earlier this week show a strong majority of 65 percent of Michiganders oppose cutting funding for schools or public services to pay for roads, while only 20 percent support doing so.

In concert with Progress Michigan, Public Policy Polling interviewed 670 Michigan voters from September 18-19, 2025 by phone and text. Margin of error for this poll is +/-3.8%. Full results for this poll are available upon request.
