NEW POLL: Michiganders Reject Matt Hall, MAGA Republicans and DeVos Budget Priorities
Michiganders oppose defunding schools, support lawmakers finding money for roads elsewhere.
MICHIGAN – On Wednesday, Progress Michigan released results from their latest Lake Effect poll. As the threat of a government shutdown looms, new polling reveals the public is overwhelmingly opposed to Republican Speaker Matt Hall’s reckless budget scheme that pits roads against schools. The following statement can be attributed to Denzel McCampbell, Progress Michigan’s managing director:
“MAGA Matt Hall has spent months pushing to slash funding for education, public services, health care, and even food assistance. Now he’s pitting these needed services and programs against the need to fix roads in Michigan. But Michiganders are not falling for this false choice and want our legislators to do the necessary work to fund our communities and fix the roads.
“The cuts to public education in Michigan would only compound the devastating effects of proposed federal cuts to the Department of Education, which threaten students with individual learning plans, special needs, and those in rural and underfunded districts. The burden will fall hardest on low-income, rural, Black, and brown students who can least afford it.
“Matt Hall is playing political games with our kids’ future and Michiganders have made it clear: we don’t want roads funded on the backs of students, working families, and our most vulnerable communities. Hall and his out-of-touch allies must stop their dangerous games of holding our schools hostage and deliver a responsible budget that invests in both education and infrastructure. The majority of Michiganders want care, not cuts, and they support the wealthy paying their fair share to shore up funding gaps left by federal cuts.
“These attacks on Michigan students and families aren’t accidental;they are the deliberate actions of a dangerous MAGA Republican Party doing the bidding of wealthy donors like the DeVos family, who put their own priorities and profits above the well-being of everyday Michiganders.”
