Matt Hall and Michigan Republicans Passed a MAGA Wish List and Called It a Budget
GOP aims to gut education, health care and other basic public services

MICHIGAN – Matt Hall and his merry band of  dangerous obstructionists in the Michigan House of Representatives have spent the past several months holding our state government hostage only to drop reckless budgets  that slash funding for essential services, undermine public education, and pile extremist politics on top of the damage already being done by federal Republicans, all at the expense of Michiganders.

“This is nothing but a MAGA wish list disguised as a budget,” said Sam Inglot, executive director of Progress Michigan. “Matt Hall and House Republicans are gutting the very departments that help to make  our state healthy, safe, and equitable just to score political points and cater to the likes of Donald Trump. They’re cutting into our classroom, our communities, and our future.”

“Instead of working to deliver a budget that invests in and protects Michiganders, Hall and the MAGA Republicans are following federal Republicans’ destructive playbook,” Inglot continued. “Their budget doesn’t support Michigan’s families; it harms our families,  protects their corporate donors and pushes an extremist agenda. Michiganders deserve better.”

The budgets Michigan House Republicans passed at the start of the summer as well as last week include:

  • Massive cuts to state departments that oversee and deliver vital health, human services, and public safety programs.
  • $2 billion in cuts to school funding, stripping funding from classrooms, Michigan’s community colleges and higher education and leaving students and families without critical support.
  • A prohibition on funding for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives across state agencies, playing politics instead of solving problems.
  • Slashing $34.9 million from revenue sharing that city and county services depend on for parks, EMTs, and even fire departments.
  • Actions that mirror their federal Republican counterparts with a $300 million cut to food assistance, eliminating the Office of Violence Prevention, and cuts billions to Medicaid even before the additional federal cuts come in 2027.

Progress Michigan will continue to combat Republican disinformation so Michiganders know who is responsible for underfunding education, weakening state services, and jeopardizing the future of the state, all while holding the government hostage to the threat of a catastrophic and expensive shutdown. Michiganders cannot afford these political games, they deserve a budget that adequately funds our state.
