House Republicans Pushes Bathroom Bill as a Distraction from Providing Real Solutions
MICHIGAN – With the introduction of House Bill 4024, Progress Michigan is calling out Michigan House Republicans for launching yet another attack on transgender youth while simultaneously trying to torpedo public education in Michigan with a bogus budget.
“This bathroom bill is a cruel distraction from the real challenges our public schools are facing, especially in light of the recent budget passed out of the house and would potentially create new costs and confusion on districts already struggling with limited resources,” said Sam Inglot, executive director of Progress Michigan. “This dangerous and discriminatory bill would open the door to invasive policing of children’s bodies, with devastating consequences for student safety and dignity.”
This bill raises more questions than answers;
- Many public schools already provide gender-neutral facilities for students of all gender identities to feel safe, so who is this bill for?
- Who will be enforcing it? Will schools be expected to conduct so-called genital checks on young girls?
- Will there be protections particularly for Black and brown girls who are already stereotyped as too masculine presenting?
- How is this bill not a violation of both federal and state protections like Title 9, the Equal Protection Act, and our statewide Elliott Larsen Civil Right Act that guarantee transgender students the same rights as their peers?
“Michigan families want fully funded classrooms, safe schools, and support for our educators, not hateful legislation that targets children and creates costly new burdens for districts,” Inglot continued. “Michigan Republicans should drop these assaults on basic freedoms they call bills and focus on delivering real solutions for Michigan students and families.”
