Nearly Two-Dozen Groups Speak Out Against Trump’s Anti-Voter EO

MICHIGAN – Following President Donald Trump’s executive order targeting elections and access to the ballot across the country, and as voting rights advocates combat anti-voter proposals here in Michigan, civic organizations and pro-democracy and voting rights groups released the following statement:

“It’s more clear than ever that our voting rights are under attack. House Joint Resolution B. A ballot initiative. The SAVE Act. And President Trump’s executive order. Different names, different levels and levers of government, but in the end, all the same: burdensome anti-voter policies driven by election denialism that threaten to disenfranchise tens of thousands of Michigan voters and millions of voters across the country.

“Michiganders have repeatedly voted in record numbers on measures to improve access to voting, not build more barriers between voters and the ballot box. Our elections have plenty of checks and balances and Michiganders know adding more barriers to the system will only result in eligible voters being unfairly prevented from voting.

“Our history is full of efforts by lawmakers to make voting more difficult, particularly for Black, brown, Indigenous, and other historically marginalized voters. This is just more of the same, amounting to little more than a 21st Century poll tax. These extreme proposals will do nothing but unnecessarily burden voters—especially voters with disabilities, rural voters, elderly voters, and voters of color—and roll back the progress we’ve made. Every voter has the right to make their voice heard and we will fight to keep it that way.”
