SOTS Vision Should Uplift Workers, Defend Against Trump
MICHIGAN – As Governor Gretchen Whitmer prepares to deliver her State of the State address, Progress Michigan is calling for her to seize this moment to address the urgent needs of working families, marginalized communities, and the environment. With the clear threats proposed by the Trump administration, Project 2025, and his oligarchs, Michigan leaders must take decisive action to safeguard democracy, economic justice, and the rights and freedoms of all Michiganders.
Progress Michigan is calling on Governor Whitmer to address at least the following issues in her address and make them policy priorities moving forward:
- Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and lobbying reform, along with corporate and utility company accountability to limit the influence of CEOs and their corporate lobbyists in our government and to make our government more transparent
- A fully-funded and equitable public education system so that every student has the opportunity to achieve their goals and work toward their dreams in life. We must ensure our schools teach accurate history and protect the rights of our children to be safe as their most authentic selves.
- Tax fairness to ensure corporations and wealthy individuals are paying their fair share. Along with affordable housing so that every Michigander has a roof over their heads and their basic needs addressed to help them thrive.
- Robust protections of the rights of marginalized communities in the state including communities of color, LGBTQ folks, and immigrants in the face of a fascist Trump Administration
- Protection of our environment by passing and signing polluter pay legislation to make sure corporate polluters are held responsible for polluting our air, land, and water.
- Bold defense of our voting rights as they are under attack by right-wing officials who want to choose their votes and disenfranchise everyone else.
“As Gov. Whitmer takes the stage for the State of the State, we will be watching closely,” said Sam Inglot, executive director of Progress Michigan. “We hope to hear a bold, unapologetic commitment to policies that uplift working families, protect the environment, and stand firm against authoritarian threats to our democracy. It’s time to act, and it’s time to lead.”
