Lansing’s Revolving Door Keeps Turning
Rep. Filler’s new job is a reminder of the need for lobbying reform
MICHIGAN – In response to news that Republican State. Rep. Graham Filler has accepted a lobbying position with McAlvey Merchant & Associates, Progress Michigan released the following statement, which can be attributed to Sam Inglot, executive director of Progress Michigan:
“I wish I could say this news came as a surprise, but it’s just another reminder that we need stronger ethics laws in Lansing. Graham Filler himself is not the problem; he is just a symptom of the revolving door between the legislature and lobbying firms we’ve allowed to be installed in our state Capitol. Michiganders cannot trust their state legislators to work for voters when there’s so much incentive for elected officials to be courting future employers while they’re still on the job. The lack of ethics and transparency in state government is a bipartisan problem—as evidenced by the fact that FOIA reform once again failed to pass last session despite Democrats having a government trifecta. It is past time for Michigan lawmakers to step up and address this issue, and if they won’t, voters will simply have to get it done ourselves.”
