Progress Michigan Statement on Senate Oversight Committee Advancing FOIA Reform Legislation
One step closer to finally reforming state’s FOIA laws
LANSING, Mich. –– On Wednesday, the Michigan State Senate’s Oversight Committee voted to send to the Senate floor legislation that will reform Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) laws to include the executive offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, along with the Michigan Legislature. Progress Michigan released the following statement, attributed to Sam Inglot, executive director:
“The sun is starting to shine brighter in Lansing as Senate Bills 669 and 670 head to the Senate floor during Sunshine Week. These bills are important for improving transparency and accountability in Michigan. As a state that has continued to rank near the bottom when it comes to transparency, we have an opportunity to right the ship and put a spotlight on Michigan as a state that is heading toward the light.
“We urge the Senate to pass this legislation and continue to work to ensure we have the strongest and most robust legislation to make our state government more transparent and accountable to all Michiganders. Michiganders continue to make clear that they want better ethics and transparency policies from our elected leaders.
“Our work is far from done, but we appreciate Senator Jeremy Moss and everyone who has worked to advance these bills. We look forward to this legislation moving through the Legislature and landing on the Governor Whitmer’s desk. We will continue to push for needed and comprehensive FOIA reform in Michigan.”
