New Poll: Michiganders on Board with Gov. Whitmer’s Agenda <3
Policies outlined in State of the State speech see high levels of support
MICHIGAN – On Wednesday, Progress Michigan released their latest Lake Effect poll, which digs into public opinion about a variety of issues and political figures.
“It’s Valentine’s Day, and Michiganders are in love with the progressive vision for Michigan’s future that Gov. Whitmer outlined during her State of the State address,” said Sam Inglot, executive director of Progress Michigan. “We’re seeing incredible approval numbers for her housing proposal, expansion of free pre-K and community college, and the caregiver credit. Michiganders are also showing that they’re ready to tax the rich to fund programs that will strengthen our communities, and while right-wing lawmakers try to take away access to gender-affirming healthcare by stoking division and fear, voters stand firm in protecting the freedom for individuals to seek this important form of healthcare.
“One thing Michiganders don’t have heart eyes for? Valentine’s Day itself, as 60 percent of respondents say they could take or leave the holiday.”

- Respondents were asked about several of Gov. Whitmer’s policy priorities:
- 56 percent support her proposed investment in affordable housing.
- 63 percent support providing two years of community college free to high school graduates.
- 76 percent support making pre-K free for all four-year-olds.
- 71 percent support her proposal for a caregiver tax credit.
- 58 percent of those polled say they’d rather raise taxes on the wealthy to increase funding for public services, while 23 percent say they’d prefer cutting funding by gutting the state’s property tax.
- When asked whether lawmakers should be able to interfere with trans people’s health care decisions, 81 percent said they believe all medical decisions should be made by patients and their doctors. Just 9 percent say lawmakers should be able to make these decisions for trans Michiganders.
- 31 percent of those polled say they love to celebrate Valentine’s Day, while 5 percent say they hate it and 60 percent say they could take or leave the holiday.
