HR and Administrative Manager – Back Office For Organizing in Michigan (“BOOM”)

BOOM LLC is an organization that provides the backend finance, administrative and HR service functions for our network of nonprofit organizations. Founded by leaders from 482Forward, the Michigan Education Justice Coalition and the Urban Core Collective, BOOM is envisioned as a backoffice hub to meet the growing needs of base building organizations, allowing them to focus on programmatic and organizing priorities.

Position Overview:

With the guidance of the Steering Committee and Managing Director, the HR and Administrative Manager will provide support to BOOM partners and staff to ensure policies and personnel management are aligned with our values and with best HR practices and keep BOOM in compliance with employment laws and regulations. The Human Resource Manager will run the daily functions of the Human Resource (HR) department, which includes but is not limited to: onboarding/offboarding of staff, including trainings and exit interviews, benefits management, payroll, and enforcement of organizational policies and practices. This position requires a collaborative, innovative, organized, flexible, empathetic HR professional with outstanding communication and management skills to support a network of Michigan-based organizations and entities to leverage, scale and innovate their work for transformative social change.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements all staff trainings (both operational and mandatory).
  • Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory trainings andwork assessments.
  • Implements new hire onboarding, including the processing of tax paperwork.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Updates employee handbook to ensure compliance with current employment law.
  • Processes payroll and manages benefit plans.
  • Performs other routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs.
  • Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources and employment law.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Key Qualifications

As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the core values of social, economic and racial justice and be driven by the mission. The candidate should demonstrate a passion for breaking new ground to lead social change. The successful candidate will most likely have had management experience with non-profit organizations. Experience working within a “values-driven” organization is strongly preferred. Additional requirements are:

  • Cultural competence, commitment to racial and economic justice and equity, and experience working within diverse communities and staff.
  • At least three years of human resource administration, non-profit management, or operations experience is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal and state labor laws, equal employment practices, and anti-discrimination laws.
  • Working knowledge of different fiscal and legal entities (including 501c3, 501c4, PAC, LLC).
  • Ability to understand, interpret, develop and communicate policies and procedures.
  • Experience developing and leading HR or operations trainings.
  • Effective, thoughtful and compassionate written and verbal communication skills; be able to adapt communication to different audiences and situations; be able to develop clear and concise written communication.
  • Excellent time management skills, a self-starter with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Flexible, values-driven individual with a good sense of humor.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Not afraid to take initiative.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, and empathy.
  • Proficient with Google Suite; Generally comfortable with tech platforms.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn and navigate the organizations systems including GoCo, Airtable, Quickbooks, T-sheets,

Employment Terms: This position is being offered as a full-time exempt position. Preference for Michigan-based staff in Detroit, Lansing or Grand Rapids. Reliable internet access is required. Salary range for this position is $65,000-75,000/year; Excellent benefits package, including health, dental, vision, and prescription insurance, access to 401k program and PTO.
