House GOP Leader’s Alleged History of Violence Concerning
Police report on 2019 domestic violence incident raises questions about Rep. Hall’s fitness for leadership and public service
LANSING, Mich. –– Recent reporting from The Daily Beast has revealed State House Minority Leader Representative Matt Hall was allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident in 2019. According to police reports, Hall was “driving fast and scaring” his girlfriend, who was also in the car at the time. During the incident, Hall allegedly damaged her phone to prevent her from recording him and also hung up the phone when she attempted to call 911. This reporting comes on the heels of the recent resurfacing of alleged threats Hall emailed to a college classmate of his then girlfriend in 2001.
“It seems like every other day we’re learning new and troubling things about current and former Michigan Republican leadership and this is yet another case,” said Sam Inglot, executive director of Progress Michigan. “As information continues to come out about Matt Hall’s alleged history with violent threats and behavior, we must all come together to ask: is this the type of person we want not only serving in public office but holding a position of leadership?”
Apart from this recent string of allegations of violence and threats coming to light, Hall is no stranger to questionable ethics and behavior. Last year, he joined other far-right lawmakers in openly spreading disinformation about LGBTQ+ protections. And in 2020, it was Matt Hall who brought discredited MAGA lawyer Rudy Giuliani to Michigan in what turned out to be a shameful committee circus of election lies and disinformation.
“I feel like a broken record at this point,” Inglot continued. “But, Michiganders deserve answers from Matt Hall and the Republican Party, and we deserve leadership that will work to protect each and every one of us.”
