Dems Take a Progressive Approach to Tax Reform
Bill package will maximize benefits for working families while avoiding regressive tax breaks
Michigan – On Monday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and legislative leaders announced the Lowering MI Costs framework, which details their approach to tax reform in 2023. The following response can be attributed to Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan:
“Today, Governor Whitmer and legislative Democrats put forward a responsible plan that provides many forms of relief for seniors, working families, and everyone in between who may be struggling. By repealing the retirement tax and expanding the Working Families Tax Credit, the Democrats are delivering support to those who need it most: the working class, people who have paid our fair share year after year to help make Michigan stronger. This package of bills is also cleverly designed to avoid triggering a regressive tax law passed by Republicans in 2015.
“Policy-making is difficult, especially when decades of GOP control have left their mark on our legislative processes, but the plan put forward by Gov. Whitmer and Democratic leaders makes the most of these circumstances to do as much good as possible. In the years to come, I trust that our new progressive majority will continue their hard work to deliver for working families and create a more just tax system, one where everyone pays what they owe.”
