Progress Michigan State of the State Statement

MICHIGAN – Progress Michigan Executive Director Lonnie Scott released the following statement regarding Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s 2023 State of the State address:

“To put it simply: what we heard tonight from Gov. Whitmer will be a game changer for so many working people, families, and communities across Michigan. Universal preschool for four-year-olds, increased funding for public education, and expanded college and job training will directly help Michiganders take care of themselves and their loved ones. We’re also pleased to see the Governor is taking a progressive approach to tax reform—working people have paid what they owe for decades while corporations fail to do their part, and Gov. Whitmer’s plans to repeal Republicans’ retirement tax and expand the Working Families Tax Credit will support the people who need it most: working families. We also heard a bold, sensible approach to the complex issue of gun violence through policies like safe storage, extreme risk protection orders and universal background checks that we believe will reduce harm across the state. Finally, the people of Michigan spoke loudly in November, rejecting the wave of right-wing attacks against people’s fundamental human rights, and Gov. Whitmer is delivering on the people’s mandate to further protect those rights by repealing draconian anti-abortion laws and finally giving the LGBTQ+ community the civil rights protections they have been denied for too long. We’re excited for the future of this state and are ready to work with elected officials like Gov. Whitmer, House Speaker Joe Tate, and Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks to build a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable Michigan.”
