MIGOP Nominates Big Lie Supporter Mike Hewitt to Board of Canvassers
The MIGOP continues to undermine Michigan voters
LANSING – Following Republican Norm Shinkle’s resignation from the state Board of Canvassers, the Michigan Republican Party has nominated three candidates to replace him. One of these nominees, 3rd Congressional District GOP Chair Mike Hewitt, is a public figure who has frequently lied about Michigan’s election systems and the 2020 election.
“The Board of Canvassers has an important role in our elections: to certify results by ensuring there aren’t any errors in the tabulation of votes,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “The shenanigans we observed in Wayne County in 2020 are an alarming example of what can happen when board members ignore their job and choose to insert their own political biases and belief in conspiracy theories into the process. Mike Hewitt’s radio show and social media presence consistently show a reckless disregard for the truth, and for the rights of Michigan voters, and placing him on the state Board of Canvassers would be a disaster. Luckily, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has the final say in replacing a board member, so that outcome isn’t likely—but the fact that GOP officials think he’s a suitable candidate in the first place shows just how deep the rot in the Republican Party goes.”
