LGBTQ+ Michiganders Deserve Equal Protection Under the Law
Attorney General Dana Nessel rightly argues the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act protects all Michiganders regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation
MICHIGAN – Today, Attorney General Dana Nessel goes to the Michigan Supreme Court to defend a 2018 legal opinion issued by the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, which states the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act applies to gender identity and sexual orientation. The following statement can be attributed to Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan:
“Today, Michigan’s first openly gay attorney general is going to court to fight for civil rights protections for LGBTQ+ Michiganders. It’s unbelievable that in the year 2022 we’re still working to make sure the LGBTQ+ community is treated fairly and equally under the law, but we’re proud Dana Nessel is taking the fight head on. Michigan Republicans have fought these protections every step of the way, but we know that no matter who you are or who you love, everyone deserves civil rights protection from discrimination and bigotry. On this historic day, we are grateful to have a champion like Dana Nessel taking a stand for all the entire LGBTQ+ community across Michigan.
