Republicans Weaponize Petition Drive Process to Attack Voting Rights

‘Secure MI Vote’ Initiative uses Big Lie to justify barriers between voters and the ballot box

MICHIGAN – After nearly a year of promoting lies about our elections, giving platforms to conspiracy theorists, and pushing blatantly anti-voter bills, Michigan Republicans will continue their crusade against the freedom to vote with a petition drive.

“Last year, Michigan voters turned out in record numbers despite a deadly pandemic and rampant disinformation—and instead of building on that progress, the ‘Secure MI Vote’ initiative would take our state backwards and make casting a ballot more difficult,” said Sam Inglot, deputy director of Progress Michigan. “Republicans in Michigan and across the country have spent nearly a year promoting the Big Lie, and this attempt to place barriers between eligible voters and the ballot box is what they’ve been building up to. The 2020 election was the most secure in our state’s history, and these policies are nothing more than a flimsy justification for voter suppression. Michiganders will not stand for these attacks. It’s on all of us to come together across race, income level, and ZIP code to defend our freedom to vote.”
