SB287 Is an Unacceptable Attack on Voting Rights
No one should have to pay to exercise their constitutional right
MICHIGAN – As the Senate Elections Committee meets to consider SB-287, a bill that would prohibit election officials from providing free postage for absentee ballots, Progress Michigan is calling the bill what it is: an attack on Michiganders’ voting rights.
“In 2018, Michiganders voted by a large margin to guarantee every voter the right to vote absentee—but Republican lawmakers want to make it harder to exercise that right,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “No one should have to pay to exercise their right to vote, and any bill that tries to put a price on our right to vote by absentee ballot is absolutely unacceptable. This is just one of many attempts by Republican lawmakers to undermine our democracy, all while they refuse to take meaningful action on COVID-19 or any of the other very real issues facing our state. It’s time for the GOP to let go of their anti-voter agenda and get back to work for the people.”
