Progress Michigan Slams GOP Chair for Assassination Joke, “Witches” Comparison
Weiser’s comments are dangerous, inflammatory, and unacceptable
MICHIGAN – The following statement on the video released today showing GOP Chair Ron Weiser joking about assassination and referring to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, AG Dana Nessel, and SOS Jocelyn Benson as “the three witches” can be attributed to Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan:
“Even after a kidnapping attempt, an insurrection, and countless violent threats, Ron Weiser either still doesn’t understand that actions have consequences, or he doesn’t care. His comments about Governor Whitmer, Attorney General Nessel, and Secretary of State Benson are misogynistic and incredibly disrespectful—and the fact that we’ve come to expect such behavior from GOP officials doesn’t make it any less appalling. I am also deeply disturbed by Weiser’s choice to casually reference assassination as an option to remove Rep. Peter Meijer, who has already spoken publicly about death threats he’s received since voting to impeach Donald Trump. After months of lectures from Trump allies about ‘unity’ and ‘civility,’ I sincerely hope the Michigan Republican Party will hold Weiser accountable for his dangerous and inflammatory rhetoric. Weiser’s conduct also makes it clear he is not fit to serve on the Board of Regents at the University of Michigan and he should resign immediately.”
