Nessel, Whitmer Are Right to Challenge DeVos

Progress Michigan slams proposed CARES Act Rule

MICHIGAN – On Tuesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel announced a lawsuit opposing Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’s efforts to divert funding meant to help low-income school districts continue to provide a quality education during the COVID-19 pandemic and give it to private schools instead. New rules proposed by Secretary DeVos that would change the mechanism for distributing funding under the CARES Act would directly harm public schools and low-income students and Progress Michigan fully supports the lawsuit brought by AG Nessel and Gov. Whitmer.

“We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Betsy DeVos is an unqualified corporate hack and a lousy Education Secretary,” said Lonnie Scott, Executive Director of Progress Michigan. “Since being appointed to this position, she has consistently prioritized corporate interests over students’ wellbeing. These new rules are just more of the same. We look forward to the day soon when Betsy sails away on one of her yachts and leaves educating our youth to the professionals, but in the meantime, we’re glad to have leaders like Gretchen Whitmer and Dana Nessel fighting for Michigan students.”
