As Budget Deadline Looms, GOP Lawmakers Take Island Vacay with DeVos
It’s been all play and no work for Republicans throughout the budget process
MICHIGAN — Today, Progress Michigan blasted the Republican legislature for taking yet another vacation as a budget deadline and potential government shutdown looms over Michigan.
“Everyone in the state knew this budget process would be a tough one in divided government and rather than sitting down and doing the hard work with Gov. Whitmer, Republican legislators have dragged their feet with a two-month long summer break and now an island getaway with Betsy DeVos and Mike Pence. It’s a shameful display of putting political party — and partying — over the wellbeing of our state,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “We are just over a week from a government shutdown and Republicans would rather hangout with political elites and wealthy lobbyists than ensure critical services of the state continue to run come October 1st. With 48,000 state employees and their livelihoods hanging in the balance, Republicans should forgo the Mackinac festivities and get back to Lansing to get the state budget done.”
