Progress Michigan Reacts to Unanimous Ruling in Gerrymandering Case
Special elections in 2020 give voters a chance to vote in fair elections
LANSING — Progress Michigan released the following statement regarding the unanimous ruling by U.S. Sixth Circuit Court in the case brought against the gerrymandered maps drawn by Republican majorities following the last census. The statement should be attributed to Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan.
“Today’s ruling is a victory for all Michigan voters and our democracy. As a result of this ruling, our future elections will fairly represent Michigan communities and ensure all votes have equal weight across the state. The Sixth Circuit Court completely vindicated the plaintiffs who brought sought to overturn the partisan districts drawn by the GOP and corporate lobbyists and to shine a light on the undemocratic practice of gerrymandering. We know the fight for a real democracy free from the influence of corporate interests is far from over, but today’s decision is a major step in the right direction.”
