Attorney General Criminal Division, Auditor General Called on to Investigate Schuette
Progress Michigan continuing efforts to shine light on AG’s shady hiring practices
MICHIGAN — Letters were sent today to the Auditor General and head of the Attorney General’s Criminal Division by Progress Michigan asking the agencies to investigate Attorney General Bill Schuette’s hiring current and former campaign workers for his taxpayer-funded staff.
The letters are based on a Detroit Free Press investigation that showed Schuette has used his office to hire campaign operatives, give no-bid contracts to prominent Republicans, and has a personal driver who also doubles as his campaign treasurer.
In the letter to the AG’s Criminal Division, Progress Michigan Executive Director Lonnie Scott wrote, “Since no one, including Attorney General Bill Schuette, is above the law this is to request on behalf of the people of Michigan an investigation of the hiring practices detailed by the Detroit Free Press. If you are unable or unwilling to launch such an investigation, independent counsel should be hired to do so. Public confidence in the Department of Attorney General demands no less.”
Scott wrote in the letter to the Auditor General, “The taxpayers of Michigan deserve to know whether they are funding the political campaigns of Bill Schuette.”
The letters, which were mailed today, can be viewed here.
