Governor Snyder Once Again Turns His Back on a Community of Color
Delaying special election another assault on democratic representation
LANSING — Progress Michigan released the following statement regarding the decision by Governor Snyder to delay a special election in the 13th Congressional District until November of 2018.
“Today’s decision about holding off on a Congressional election in Detroit is another example of Rick Snyder willfully taking away people’s right to elected representation in a prominent community of color. His decision will leave this district without a voice in Congress for nearly a year,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “Rick Snyder is the architect of Michigan’s failed emergency manager law, which disproportionately affected communities of color leaving them without democratically elected leaders and led to the Flint Water Crisis. The sad fact is that Rick Snyder has always had a willful blind spot when it comes to racial justice, we saw that with his decision around MSP Col. Kriste Etue, and today’s decision is further proof that Snyder chooses to ignore communities of color.”
