Republicans Follow DeVos Orders, Move Legislation to Gut Teacher Pension Fund
Snyder should show leadership and veto legislation crafted behind closed doors
LANSING — Progress Michigan released the following statement regarding the passage of DeVos-inspired legislation heading to Governor Rick Snyder that guts pensions for teachers and threatens a secure retirement.
“This is yet another DeVos-backed attack on our neighborhood public schools and the teachers that make them great. This deal was forged behind closed doors, with some elected officials being completely left out of the process. Gov. Snyder should stand up for once to the DeVos family and their anti-public education agenda by vetoing this legislation,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “This assault on teachers’ retirement was started by the DeVos family in September 2016 and their Republican lackeys in the legislature have been in a dead sprint to get it done ever since. Michigan Republicans are sending a clear message to our local school districts, parents, and students that they’re not interested having the best teachers in our schools. They’re more concerned about bending to the whims of their right-wing, for-profit charter corporate donors.”
