Progress Michigan Statement on Confirmation of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General
LANSING — Progress Michigan released the following statement regarding the confirmation of Senator Jeff Sessions as United States Attorney General. The statement should be attributed to Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan.
“The confirmation of Jeff Sessions to serve as our nation’s top law enforcement officer is a slap in the face of those who respect the inherent dignity and equality of every human being regardless of gender, race, religion, income or sexual orientation. Sessions has a long record of open racism disguised as public policy that should have given every Senator a reason to vote against his confirmation. This is just one more example of the Republican Party telling the majority of Americans to sit down and shut up, much like they did to Sen. Elizabeth Warren during Senate debate. They say that the arc of the moral universe is long but bends towards justice. We now know that unless the people resist and persist, today’s Republican Party intends to bend the arc back to the days of Jim Crow.”
