Progress Michigan to Schuette: Stop Offensive, Misleading Campaign Against Parole Reform
LANSING – Today Progress Michigan released the following statement condemning Attorney General Bill Schuette’s offensive and misleading campaign against House Bill 4138, a parole reform bill that seeks to reform Michigan’s prison system by allowing non-violent offenders a second shot at life.
“It says a lot about Bill Schuette’s motives that he cannot engage in an honest debate about what this parole reform will actually do,” said Hugh Madden, communications director of Progress Michigan. “This bill is about fixing our broken parole system and changing Michigan’s culture of locking people away and throwing away the key. As the people’s attorney, Schuette is supposed to be an advocate for the people of Michigan and that includes Michiganders who have served their debt to society and are ready to become active citizens again. Instead, Schuette is acting like a petulant jailer who wants nothing more than to waste lives and resources as we continue to let our prison population skyrocket.”
