Statement from Progress Michigan Executive Director Lonnie Scott on the Senate Republicans Failing Michigan Residents

LANSING — Senate Democrats made a resolution to immediately end the 2013 fiscal year, which would allow the Medicaid expansion bill to take effect on January 1, 2014 as the law was intended. This move would save Michigan taxpayers more than $630 million dollars in federal funding, however Senate Republicans stymied the effort to save Michigan residents money.

“Conservatives in the Senate have once again been given an opportunity to help Michigan’s struggling families and save taxpayers money, but callously ignored it,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “By failing to take on the Senate Democrats’ proposal to implement Medicaid expansion as soon as possible, conservatives have shown they don’t care about saving the state money — to the tune of $7 million a day — and they care even less about the uninsured families that will continue to struggle because of lack of coverage.”
