Jase Bolger tries to handicap another election after calling Roy Schmidt scandal “appropriate”
LANSING – Citizens’ watchdog group Progress Michigan today condemned Republican Speaker Jase Bolger for seriously entertaining an attempt to rig the 2016 Presidential election in Michigan. Today Gongwer reported that Bolger said the proposal “was motivated by good policy.”
“After Speaker Bolger called the scandal surrounding Roy Schmidt’s party switch ‘appropriate,’ no one in Lansing should be surprised at the utter contempt he continues to display for Michigan’s middle class families,” said Zack Pohl, Executive Director of Progress Michigan. “Bolger likes to say that he is focused on policy, not politics, but the simple fact is that the scheme to rig the Electoral College is business as usual from a Speaker with the most divisive and politically-motivated agenda Michigan has ever seen.”
Last week RNC Chairman Reince Priebus endorsed the scheme, saying states “that have been consistently (Democratic) that are fully controlled (by Republicans) ought to be looking at” the plan. Under the plan, Mitt Romney would have won 9 of Michigan’s electoral votes to President Obama’s 7 in 2012, although President Obama won the popular vote in Michigan by 9 percentage points or nearly 500,000 votes.
Bolger is currently under a grand jury investigation for attempting to rig the election in the 76th state House district by planting a fake Democratic candidate so Rep. Roy Schmidt could be reelected without opposition. In his investigation of the Roy Schmidt scandal, Republican prosecutor William Forsyth said he was “embarrassed and offended” by Speaker Bolger’s attempt to “undermine the election.”
