Santorum gives “RomneyCare” an early Anniversary Gift
MICHIGAN – Today Rick Santorum announced that he was ending his campaign for the Republican nomination for President. This move is being lauded by advocates as a “win” for healthcare, because it now assures that the presumptive nominee will be Mitt Romney, who designed the healthcare plan that “Obamacare” is based on.
Like many positions on issues Romney now holds, he was for universal healthcare and the individual responsibility provision before he was against it. As Governor of Massachusetts, Romney implemented a healthcare system on which the Affordable Care Act was modeled. The plans are nearly identical and both rely on the individual responsibility provision to ensure that everyone is covered. One of Romney’s top advisors on health care attended five meetings at the White House, including a meeting with President Obama, to help the Obama administration copy Romney’s plan; he called Romney “the father of health-care reform.”
Santorum’s timing couldn’t have been better as Romney will be celebrating the anniversary of the signing of RomneyCare into law in Massachussetts this Thursday.
“It seems that Rick Santorum wanted to give Mitt Romney an early anniversary present, so he cleared his way to the Republican nomination for President” said Lonnie Scott, Communications Director for Know Your Care Michigan. “This is a huge victory for the supporters of the Affordable Care Act. It will be hard for Romney to run on a platform against the President’s healthcare plan, since he is the person who helped to craft it in the first place.”
Romney signed what he hailed at the time to be a “landmark healthcare reform bill” on April 12, 2006. This Thursday will mark the 6-year anniversary of the bill that has commonly become known as RomneyCare. It is widely known that this bill was the basis for the sweeping healthcare reform that was signed in to law by president Obama in 2010.
