Progress Michigan (“we”, “our” or “PM”) respects and is committed to protecting the privacy of users of our website located at www.ProgressMichigan.org (the “Site”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect information about you through the Site and how we use such information. In order to fully understand PM’s privacy practices, you are encouraged to read this Privacy Policy. This Policy applies to information we collect about you on or through the Site. This Privacy Policy covers the two types of information we gather on the Site, personal and aggregated. The term “personal information” refers to data you voluntarily provide to us in connection with your use of the Site and services that identify you, such as your name, physical address and/or e-mail address. The term “aggregated data” refers to general, abstracted information regarding visitors and users of our Site, including traffic patterns, number of visits to certain pages, visits from other websites or to third-party websites linked to our Site, use of particular services or features on the Site or on other websites reached through our Site.

Data Collection and Use

  • Some of our services require you to register for an account. We ask you for some personal information in order to create an account (such as your name, email address, mailing address, and a password for your account) and we will use that information to provide the service. In the event you choose to make a donation online to ProgressMichigan.org, we use trusted third party service providers who process and maintain your credit card information in encrypted form on secure servers.
  • When we require personal information, we will inform you about the types of information we collect and how we may use it. We hope this will help you make an informed decision about sharing your personal information with us.
  • For petitions and surveys signed or completed by you, we may treat your name, city, state, and comments as public information. For example, we may provide compilations of petitions, with users comments, to public officials, but we will not disclose your street address, email address or phone number, without your prior consent. We may also make your comments, along with your first name, city, state, and country, available to the press and public online.
    • The Site enables you to send individual emails through the Site in your name, and in connection with such emails, we may disclose your email address as the return address to public officials. If you write letters or emails to newspapers using the Site, we may disclose your email address and full name and contact information as part of the submission.
    • We collect aggregated data your browser makes available whenever you visit a website. This log information includes your Internet Protocol address, browser type, browser language, the date and time of your query and one or more cookies that may uniquely identify your browser. We use this information to operate, develop and improve our services.
    • We may analyze web logs in order to understand traffic patterns and determine whether there are problems with the Site. We may also use embedded images in emails to track open rates for emailings, so that we can tell which email communications appeal most to users of our Site and services.

Cookies

  • Upon your first visit to the Site, a cookie is sent to your computer that uniquely identifies your browser. A “cookie” is a small file containing a string of characters that is sent to your computer when you visit a website. We use cookies to collect and maintain aggregate information about Site use, to improve the quality of our services and to better understand how people interact with our Site. We do this by storing user preferences in cookies and by tracking user trends and patterns of how people search. We use this aggregated data only in the ways explained in this Privacy Policy.
  • Parts of the Site are password-protected. If you check “Remember Me” upon log-in, we may use a “cookie” to enable you to return to password-protected areas of the Site without having to re-enter your password.
  • Most browsers are initially set up to accept cookies. You can reset your browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, some the Site’s features or services may not function properly without cookies.

Third-Party Advertising and Links to Other Websites

Our site may include third-party advertising and links to other websites. We do not provide any personal information to these advertisers or third-party websites.

These third-party websites and advertisers, or Internet advertising companies working on their behalf, sometimes use technology to send (or “serve”) the advertisements that appear on our Sites directly to your browser. They automatically receive your IP address when this happens. They may also use cookies, JavaScript, web beacons (also known as action tags or single-pixel gifs), and other technologies to measure the effectiveness of their ads and to personalize advertising content. We do not have access to or control over cookies or other features that they may use, and the information practices of these advertisers and third-party websites are not covered by this Privacy Policy. Please contact them directly for more information about their privacy practices. In addition, the Network Advertising Initiative offers useful information about Internet advertising companies (also called “ad networks” or “network advertisers”), including information about how to opt-out of their information collection.
