Tell the Senate to Pass Matt’s Safe School Law
Our schools should be safe havens where children can learn and succeed. Our students should not have to worry or be in fear when they are in school.
Unfortunately, bullying is a real problem in our schools and sometimes, harassment, hazing and bullying can have tragic, deadly consequences. In 2002, East Lansing eighth-grader Matt Epling took his own life after being a victim of severe hazing and bullying at his school. Matt was 14 years old. Sadly, Matt’s story is not unique.
The Michigan House of Representatives has passed legislation that would strengthen protections of our children against bullying. “Matt’s Safe School Law,” which passed the House in 2007, would uniformly define bullying and harassment – including online acts – and requires schools to adopt anti-bullying policies.
Though the House has acted, the Senate has not. “Matt’s Safe School Law” will help our children learn in a safe environment.
Six out of 10 children in Michigan report being harassed and bullied.
Please help protect our children and ask the Senate to pass “Matt’s Safe School Law” HB 4162 (H-4) and make our schools safe places to learn for our children.
Make your voices heard. Please take action and send a letter to your senator urging support for “Matt’s Safe School Law.”
