Granholm: Stop the Coal Rush!
|
“The renewable energy industry is already providing new jobs and better lives across our state…. Jobs for electricians installing wind turbines in the Thumb. Jobs for machinists making the parts for those wind turbines in Eaton Rapids. Jobs for factory workers assembling wind turbines in The fact that these jobs exist in Michigan today is no accident. These jobs are here because we put a strategy in place to bring them here – often by beating out other states and other countries to get them.” – Governor Jennifer Granholm – 2009 State of the State address Governor Granholm said it. Jobs are already being created in Michigan because of incentives put in place by Michigan’s legislature to increase our renewable energy standard. Granholm also continued by saying that we need to go further, that we can create even more good paying jobs that will put our unemployed back to work. In the 2009 State of the State address, Gov. Granholm put out a goal to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels for generating electricity by 45 percent by 2020. She also said that because of these reductions there is less need for coal plants in Michigan then directed the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to evaluate both the need for additional electricity generation and all feasible and prudent alternatives before approving new coal-fired power plants in Michigan. Still, the energy debate continues to heat up and Governor Granholm can tell the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to deny all coal plant proposal requests in Michigan. Governor Granholm has proved that she knows Michigan does not need another coal plant and that we should first invest in clean, alternative energy technology, but she needs to hear that you support her to take it an important step further! Take action today and send Governor Granholm an email letting her know you support action to deny all coal plant proposals in Michigan and to look to clean, alternative energies first. |
