Governor Granholm:

I am writing to you today to thank you for standing up for choice and vetoing Senate Bill 776. SB 776 seeks to limit a woman's access to reproductive healthcare and is wrong for Michigan.

As you know, state legislators gave into pressure from right-wing forces and passed this unnecessary and wasteful legislation, which would prohibit abortion methods that were already banned by the ultra-conservative U.S. Supreme Court. Given that a ban is already in place, legislators who voted in favor of it are guilty of pandering to anti-choice groups, and ignoring more pressing challenges facing the state, such as the economy, job growth, and skyrocketing foreclosure rates.

Your veto was crucial because it sent a message to the legislature that instead of wasting taxpayers' time on politically divisive votes, House and Senate leaders should be working to rebuild the struggling Michigan economy and increase job growth in our state. As you know, Michigan is in the midst of an economic crisis, and it's up to leaders like you to end blatant displays of partisan pandering in the Michigan legislature. Thank you for vetoing SB 776, and continue to keep up the good work!
