CLEAN WATER ACTION & CLEAN WATER FUND
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
DEPUTY POLICY & CAMPAIGNS DIRECTOR
East Lansing, MI           
           
Closing Date:  January 12, 2008 (or until the ideal candidates is identified)

Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund seeks a Deputy Policy & Campaigns Director who will work with the State Director, Great Lakes Policy Director and other program staff to advocate on behalf of the organization’s 205,000 Michigan members and its environmental, public health and democracy campaigns. 

The Deputy Policy & Campaigns Director will ensure an on-going presence at the State Capitol by monitoring legislative activities, building relationships with state lawmakers and staff, organizing and activating citizen lobbyists, supervising professional organizers, arranging for testimony and/or testifying on key environmental and public health issues, coordinating legislative follow-up with canvass campaigns, and other activities as necessary and appropriate.  The Deputy Policy & Campaigns Director will also be responsible for leading the organization’s communications work. She/he will also play a key role in advocacy work aimed at electing pro-environment candidates and holding elected officials accountable to voters.

Deputy Policy & Campaigns Director Responsibilities
•    Work with local groups, environmental partners, and Clean Water Action staff and members to develop and implement winning legislative strategies and campaigns
•    Develop goals, plans, and strategies for elections and related programs.
•    Produce model campaign messages, materials, and information. Help develop and carry out plans for publicizing campaign-related messages and activities.
•    Supervise daily activities of professional, community based organizers
•    Build and strengthen networks and coalitions to support legislative and political campaigns
•    Implement a recently adopted communications plan for earned media and online advocacy
•    Represent the organization to groups and individuals
•    Strengthen Clean Water Action’s activist base through citizen lobby programs
•    Legislative follow up with field and phone canvass campaigns
•    Undertake research efforts as needed to further legislative goals
•    Work with staff to coordinate citizen lobby days at the Capitol and in targeted legislative districts
•    Coordinate bi-annual legislative scorecard
•    Willingness to engage in fundraising with major donors and foundations
•    Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

•    Commitment to the organization’s mission
•    Experience working with leaders in political, environmental, media and funder communities
•    Successful professional legislative campaign experience
•    Good judgment; well organized and able to handle multiple responsibilities.
•    Strong ability to analyze situations and options and develop strategies for success.
•    Versatile, quick learner; highly productive, hardworking, and reliable work style; able to meet deadlines and do what it takes to get results
•    Strong teamwork and ability to work with diverse people and community groups
•    Experience in all aspects of press relations and media communications
•    Experience in directing and supervising volunteers and staff
•    A minimum four years successful professional legislative experience at the state Capitol is desired; with additional direct legislative experience a plus
•    Familiarity or willingness to undertake cutting edge internet advocacy
•    Strong oral/written communication and interpersonal skills, including experience in preparing and delivering public presentations
•    Proficiency with database programs and technologies
•    Ability to successfully network with individuals and organizations
•    Well-organized and self-motivated with the ability to work independently
•    Flexibility to adjust to project needs and to work weekday evenings and weekends as needed
