Director of Policy, Triangle Foundation

The Director of Policy will be responsible for Triangle Foundation’s policy work. This individual will be very well-versed in LGBT issues and able to communicate at a high level and work in collaboration. This position plays an important role in supporting Triangle’s overall work and moving the LGBT movement forward in Michigan.

Triangle Foundation is Michigan’s leading organization serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied communities. Triangle Foundation is comprised of two primary programs – Victim Services and Policy & Legislation with two programs that support these: Community Events and Youth Initiatives. It is the mission of Triangle Foundation to promote equality and to secure freedom from violence, intimidation and discrimination for LGBT persons throughout Michigan. About the Position
The DOP develops and directs all policy work, including federal, state, local, non-profit and private sector issues. The DOP handles a wide range of issues including anti-discrimination, adoption, domestic partnership benefits, marriage equality, public health, criminal law, K-12 and college policy, public funding of social programs, church/state separation, privacy rights, transgender equality and other issues important to our coalition members. This position requires bold, broad and creative thinking about the less obvious issues impacting lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender and people living with HIV or AIDS (LGBTH+).

Responsibilities

  • Supervises policy staff, including field organizers, the youth initiatives coordinator, interns, and volunteers
  • Organizing from a geographic and demographic-based perspective throughout Michigan to help Triangle reach its mission of ending violence and discrimination against LGBT people
  • Advance pro-LGBTH+ policy and defeat anti-LGBTH+ policy with the broadest possible reach
  • Tasks include researching policy, compiling best practices, soliciting personal stories, and creating all supportive materials for campaigns (talking points, petitions, sample letters, op-eds, etc.)
  • Current on all relevant LGBT policy issues nationally and key developments in others states and countries
  • Work in diverse coalitions that include non-LGBT issues
  • Think and work strategically and focus on long term substantive gains for the LGBT community
  • Fundraising, including house parties, large donor solicitations, and generating written proposals

Qualifications

  • Able to effectively handle complex situations and have excellent instincts
  • Well-organized and detail oriented
  • Above average computer skills
  • Excellent written and interpersonal, communication and relationship building skills
  • Energetic, outgoing, self-motivated and optimistic
  • Able to work well with diverse groups including people working against LGBT equality.
  • Able to comprehend and analyze wide array of public and private policy issues
  • Must be comfortable and confident with frequent and diverse fundraising efforts
  • Able to lead and supervise multiple staff running multiple programs
  • 3 years minimum in policy, political or advocacy work
  • 2 years minimum supervisory experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited college or university
  • Support of the mission, vision and work of Triangle Foundation

  • Timeliness and quality of reports and other written materials
  • Completion of projects on time and in an efficient manner
  • Quality of oral and written communications
  • Degree of involvement in overall organization initiatives
  • Ability to work independently, but also as a part of a team

Supervisor
The Director of Policy will report to the Deputy Director

Compensation
