Volunteer Coordinator, Greening of Detroit

The Greening of Detroit works to grow a greener Detroit through planting and educational programs, environmental leadership, advocacy, and by building community capacity. Our organization is seeking a candidate for a 1700 hour (1 year/ full-time) AmeriCorps position to assist our Education Director in coordinating environmental education programming at local schools.

Americorps*VISTA Member Responsibilities:

• Recruit volunteers from diverse set of community members.
• Help promote Greening of Detroit activities to potential volunteers.
• Communicate with volunteers and potential volunteers prior to, during and after volunteer events.
• Maintain volunteer relationships through consistent communication.
• Update and maintain volunteer database, online postings, and volunteer calendar.
• Work strategically with project managers to coordinate on-site activities.

Eligible candidates must meet the following requirements:

• U.S. Citizen, U.S. National or lawful permanent resident of the U.S.
• Be at least 17 years old
• Be able to provide copy of driver’s license, social security card and birth certificate or passport.
• Have a high school diploma or equivalency certificate – A bachelors degree in forestry, horticulture, or other natural science is preferred.
• Must have reliable transportation and phone.
• Previous experience working with volunteers and community groups and/or experience in environmental education is desirable.
• Must demonstrate ability to work with diverse groups of people, excellent communication and organization skills, computer literacy, and a genuine appreciation for the urban environment.
• Spanish and/or Arabic speakers encouraged to apply.

AmeriCorps Member Benefits

1700 Service Hour AmeriCorps Members can receive:
• $10,197 annual stipend
• $4,725 educational award (upon successful completion of contracted hours)
• Health care benefits
