Union Organizer, American Federation of Teachers (MI)

Location: SE Michigan, Mid-Michigan, Kalamazoo
AFT Michigan is seeking union organizers to work on campaigns in the Detroit/Metro, Lansing/Mid-Michigan, and Kalamazoo areas.
Candidates should have strong labor or other non-profit organizing and administrative skills, experience working with diverse populations, and a commitment to a participatory and progressive labor movement. These positions are one year in length with the possibility of longer-term employment.
Necessary Qualifications:
- Strong one-on-one organizing skills
- Ability to manage time and coordinate multiple projects in high-stress situations
- Ability both to work independently and to facilitate group interactions
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
- Willingness to make at least a one-year commitment
- Basic computing knowledge including experience with Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications:
- Internal organizing experience, especially related to unions and higher education;
- Experience organizing job actions
- Prior experience in a higher education environment
- Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations
- Experience as a staff member in a volunteer-run organization
- Experience in the labor movement
Applications will be accepted through July 30, 2008. Starting salary is $34,000 to $51,000 based on experience, demonstrated success in organizing, and assigned responsibilities. Health insurance provided by employer.
