Global Warming Project Coordinator, MI League of Conservation Voters

The Michigan League of Conservation Voters is seeking a talented and self-motivated Project Coordinator to oversee its increasingly important work on global warming. This is a full-time position.

Organizational Background:

Michigan League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is a dynamic non-profit, independent political organization working with its members and the state’s conservation and environmental community to make environmental protection a top priority with elected officials and the voting public. Michigan LCV helps elect candidates to public office who stand up for conservation principles, and holds elected officials accountable for their actions. The affiliated Michigan LCV Education Fund shares staff and office space with Michigan LCV, and is a 501©(3), non-profit, non-partisan organization that builds the political muscle of the conservation community through technical support, training and coalition building. Michigan LCV Education Fund also supports programs to increase voting and citizen participation in Michigan’s democratic process. Michigan League of Conservation Voter’s main office is in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Field Officer will be responsible for programmatic work for both organizations. The position is responsible to and supervised by the Executive Director.

In 2007, the national LCV Education Fund, in partnership with the state leagues, launched a major campaign to elevate global warming in the 2008 presidential primaries. The Heat Is On campaign (www.heatison.org) has been active in the early-voting states for more than a year and has yielded marked success. In 2008, Michigan LCV plans to work to make global warming a top priority for voters and particularly for Michigan’s congressional delegation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Project Coordinator will oversee the day-to-day planning and implementation of the Global Warming program. The Project Coordinator will work closely with the Executive Director, the Campaigns Manager, the Field Director, the Board and coalition partners to recruit volunteers (grassroots and grasstops), conduct outreach to opinion leaders, generate earned media, and engage voters and the congressional delegation about the urgency and importance of global warming.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Work with Executive Director and national LCV to develop and implement a year-long plan to elevate global warming as a top-tier priority in Michigan
  • Work with Michigan LCV staff and coalition partners to coordinate outreach and organizing efforts
  • Conduct outreach to non-traditional allies concerned about global warming
  • Educate the public through town hall forums and other public presentations
  • Meet with opinion leaders (reporters, editorial boards, state elected officials, donors, etc.) to engage them on the threats and opportunities associated with global warming.
  • Create e-action alerts and other member communications

The Project Coordinator is responsible for performing the administrative tasks necessary to accomplish his or her job, including but not limited to:

  • Filling out bi-monthly time sheets and other office paperwork, as appropriate;
  • Participating in and assisting with trainings for staff, member leaders, and other members for their leadership development;
  • Attending staff, Board and annual meetings, and other meetings and events as assigned.

Necessary Qualifications:
The ideal candidates will have a college degree and several years experience in organizing and advocacy. Skills should include:

  • Strong communication skills, including public speaking and advocacy writing
  • Strong networking skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced campaign environment and a witty, critical, and exuberant atmosphere
  • Familiarity with the issue of global warming
  • Strong leadership skills to build and maintain a team
  • Strong computer skills
  • Willingness to travel throughout the state;

Compensation:
Salary is commensurate with relevant professional experience.
