Education Manager, Michigan Citizens for Stem Cell Research & Cures

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This position provides leadership, direction and supervision in helping Michigan Citizens for Stem Cell Research & Cures (MCSCRC) educate and inform Michigan residents, public officials and policy makers, and the media in an identified region about the complex science, the biomedical potential and the current policies (as a lay person, not a scientist) affecting stem cell research. The Education Manager is responsible for supervising 5 Regional Education Coordinators throughout the state and for scheduling educational presentations, being the primary speaker for these presentations, and recruiting, training and supervising volunteers as speakers in the non-Detroit Southeast Michigan area, as well. In this position, you will also act as liaison to local media and organizations in the area, arranging one-on-one meetings for yourself as an MCSCRC representative or for MCSCRC leadership.
The Education Manager will supervise and work with other MCSCRC Education Coordinators to organize relevant initiatives throughout Michigan.
This is a full-time position through November 2008. You must have experience in staff management, public speaking and volunteer recruitment and supervision, and be well connected in Southeast Michigan to qualify for this job. There will be five Regional Program Coordinators throughout Michigan reporting to this position and this position reports to the Program Vice President.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in human services, communications or a related field required.
- 3 years of staff management and staff supervision experience
- 2 years of speaking experience.
- 2 year experience recruiting, training and supervising volunteers.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing and electronically to a variety of audiences.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to train and supervise others as speakers
- Experience educating groups and high-level individuals about multi-tiered topic and organizational mission
- Familiarity with a wide range of organizations in the region
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Develop a lay working knowledge of Stem Cell Research and be able to teach it
- Supervise, organize and motivate a network of 5 Regional Education Coordinators located throughout Michigan
- Setting goals and assuring goals are met by Coordinators
- Actively recruit and train volunteers to be presenters in the identified region.
- Provide supervision to volunteers.
- Actively contact and schedule presentations and individual meetings at various organizations and media in identified region.
- Work with Regional Coordinators to promote seamless educational initiatives and strategies.
- Represent MCSCRC at public and media events.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- You will work out of the MCSCRC offices at 11 Mile & Lahser in Southfield
- Requires well-organized, self-motivated, high-output individual
- High volume of public contact
- Travel by car to attend functions and meet with Coordinators throughout state

RATE:
$3,000 to $3,750 per month
