Organizational Description: The Greening of Detroit is a 501c(3) non-profit organization working with neighborhoods, community groups, schools, churches and businesses to grow a greener Detroit through planting and providing the vision for a Green Industries workforce training program that will incorporate The Greening’s well-established youth employment program as well as a new adult workforce development program.
Position Summary: The Director is responsible for developing The Greening’s policies, programs and procedures for all workforce development activities. He or she will supervise the Workforce Development Department including primary responsibility for the adult workforce program as well as supervision of the Youth Employment Coordinator and the Americorps *VISTA Volunteer Coordinator. The Director will draft program and proposal budgets as well as program and grant reports. The Director of Workforce Development reports to the President of The Greening of Detroit.
Work Environment: The Director of Workforce Development will maintain an office in the headquarters of The Greening of Detroit and will conduct off-site supervision of programs and staff as necessary. Director of Workforce Development coordinates activities with all other program directors, ensuring a well-trained workforce for successful completion of The Greening’s projects.
Required Skills: The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in development or supervision of a successful workforce development program. A masters degree is desirable but candidates will also be welcomed who have a minimum of a bachelors degree combined with at least 5 years of experience in the field. Progress and achievement are critically important at The Greening of Detroit and the successful candidate will present an inspiring vision for the new workforce program at The Greening and a demonstrated ability to put vision into action. Candidates must also display professionalism, independent judgment and decision-making ability, self-motivation and a team mentality. We are looking for a proven ability to create successful partnerships, excellent communication and organizational skills, and a genuine appreciation for the urban environment.
Duties and Responsibilities in Rank Order:
- Workforce Development Program Development
1) Design new green industries workforce program incorporating forestry, landscaping, vacant space management, and nursery craft elements, for immediate implementation as a pilot program.
2) Oversee continued development of well-established youth employment program as an element of Workforce Development Program.
3) Create annual 3 year program development plan
4) Draft annual program budget and reports (as requested by CFO)
5) Draft Grant Budgets and Reports and attend donor meetings (as requested by Development Director)
6) Present at state, regional and national conferences - Supervise Workforce Development Staff
1) Recruit departmental employees
2) Recruit workforce
3) Conduct Reviews of departmental employees
4) Develop training standards - Direct all workforce, volunteer and employment programs
- Evaluate all workforce, volunteer and employment programs
- Identify prospective clients, third party employers, and recruitment or training partners
- Contribute to The Greening of Detroit’s newsletter
- Assists in all other tasks involved with the promotion, operation and support of The Greening of Detroit as directed by the President of The Greening of Detroit
