Organizational Description: http://www.greeningofdetroit.com">The Greening of Detroit is a 501©(3) non-profit organization working with neighborhoods, community groups, schools, churches and businesses to grow a greener Detroit through planting and educational programs, environmental leadership, advocacy and by building community capacity. For the past 18 years we have been working to reforest the City of Detroit. We are currently planting and distributing approximately 5,000 trees per year in the city of Detroit. We work closely with the City of Detroit?s General Services, Planning and Recreation Departments as well as neighborhood block clubs from throughout the city to complete this work.
Position Summary: The Nursery Operations Manager will develop and implement The Greening of Detroit?s Nursery Program with the goal of producing the majority of Greening planting stock within the city of Detroit. Production facilities will include neighborhood nurseries built on vacant lots throughout Detroit, Detroit schoolyards and classroom greenhouses, and the City of Detroit?s Meyers Nursery for which The Greening is presently negotiating an operating agreement. The Nursery Operations Manager will work extensively with the City of Detroit?s General Services Division as development of the Meyers Nursery begins. The Nursery Operations Manager, together with the Director of Urban Forestry will draft nursery program and proposal budgets as well as nursery program and grant reports. The Nursery Operations Manager reports to the Director of Urban Forestry.
Work Environment: The Nursery Operations Manager will maintain workspace at the headquarters of The Greening of Detroit with most daily activity occurring in the field. It is anticipated that the Nursery Manager will eventually maintain his or her office at the Meyers Nursery, participating in weekly staff meetings and departmental meetings at the headquarters of The Greening of Detroit. Nursery Operations generally occur Monday through Friday.
Required Skills: The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor of Science in Forestry, Horticulture, Environmental Science or a related field and experience in the nursery trade. Candidates will be considered who have not achieved a degree but who have comprehensive experience in the nursery trade. Progress and achievement are critically important at The Greening of Detroit and the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to design and implement a clear plan for the successfully implementing the envisioned nursery program. Candidates must also display professionalism, independent judgment and decision-making ability, self-motivation and a team mentality. We are looking for a proven ability to create successful partnerships, excellent communication and organizational skills, and a genuine appreciation for the urban environment.
Duties and Responsibilities in Rank Order:
- Nursery Program Development
1) Create annual 3 year program development plan
2) Draft annual program budget and reports (as requested by Director of Urban Forestry)
3) Draft Grant Budgets and Reports (as requested by Director of Urban Forestry) - Coordinate Neighborhood Nursery Operations and Meyers Nursery Operations
1) Create Neighborhood Nursery site criteria
2) Develop Neighborhood Nursery planting and transplant programs
3) Develop Meyers Nursery planting program
4) Develop school seedling production program
5) Produce tree stock for Greening Plantings from both neighborhood and Meyers Nursery sites - Direct Nursery Corps
- Coordinate all neighborhood nursery out-planting events
- Manage nursery equipment acquisition, maintenance and logistics
- Provides instruction at Greening educational programs
- Implements/Staffs annual tree sale
- Works with Greening Trees Committee
- Assists in all other tasks involved with the promotion, operation and support of The Greening of Detroit as directed by the President of The Greening of Detroit
