Citizen Outreach Director, Grassroots Campaigns, Inc.
Organization: Grassroots Campaigns, Inc. is a national firm specializing in building grassroots support for progressive causes, political candidates, public interest campaigns, and non-profit organizations. We are running one of the largest national grassroots mobilization efforts and small donor fundraising drives in 2008 to take back the White House, expand majorities in the Senate and Congress, and put this country on a more progressive path. Building on our experience with ground-breaking get-out-the-vote efforts in 2004 and 2006, we will be teaming up with some of the leading progressive groups, such as MoveOn.org and the Democratic National Committee, to continue the electoral success of 2006. Through working on our campaigns, staff will learn all of the basic skills of grassroots political organizing, from recruiting, training and mobilizing groups of staff and volunteers, to running all the finances associated with a local campaign office.
Job Responsibilities: Citizen Outreach Directors and Assistant Directors will manage one of 50 campaign offices for the Democratic National Committee, with bottom-line responsibility for all local operations. Most canvass offices will reach 50,000 households, identify 8,000 new donors and raise $250,000.
Recruitment: Build a team of 15-50 canvassers by recruiting from within the local community. Interview prospective staff and make hiring decisions.
Staff Management: Teach canvassing/fundraising skills. Work with your staff in individual and group settings, with a particular eye towards developing leaders. Cultivate a welcoming and motivating atmosphere.
Canvassing: Canvass door-to-door three days per week, to work with staff in the field and meet personal fundraising requirements.
Administration: Carefully track income and expenses. Manage the budget for your office. Process staff payroll. Maintain records for future organizing efforts.
Qualifications: Strong communication and motivational skills, work ethic, and desire for political change are essential. Previous field or canvassing experience is a plus but not a requirement.
Expectations: Campaign hours can run 80 -100 hours per week, including work on weekends. Good teamwork and a positive attitude are critical.
