Campaign Finance Complaint Filed Over Schuette’s Hiring of Political Staff
Freep investigation showed Schuette playing fast and loose with public funds
LANSING — Today, Progress Michigan mailed a campaign finance complaint to the Secretary of State’s office over Attorney General Bill Schuette’s use of public funds to hire political staff for his gubernatorial campaign.
The complaint cites a December 2017 Detroit Free Press investigation showing Schuette using his office and the public funds that come with it for political reasons. The in-depth story showed how Schuette has used his AG office funds like a political slush account, hiring GOP organizers and allies to public positions and handing out massive no-bid contracts to supporters.
“Schuette has used millions of dollars in public resources to pay persons as employees or contractors who have worked on his Attorney General campaigns and are working on his gubernatorial campaign. Public resources are being used by Schuette to help pay for his campaign staff,” the complaint states.
“Bill Schuette has spent millions of dollars that should be used to protect Michiganders as his personal political piggybank and it needs to end,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “This money should be used to stop irresponsible business owners, scam artists, and other bad actors from abusing Michigan residents, instead it’s gone into the pockets of Schuette’s political allies. The people of Michigan deserve better.”
The complaint, which was mailed to the Secretary of State’s office today, can be viewed here.
